「子供の時に化学療法を活用すると聞こえなくなってしまう！」”Your child may get hearing loss when they use chemotherapy!”

カナダの名門大学であるブリテッシュコロンビア大学が発表した論文によると、子供が小さい頃に癌を治療するために活用する化学療法を行うと、聴力がなくなってしまうという驚きの研究結果を発表しました。

子供の中でも、言語能力を習得する頃の子供への化学療法は耳が聞こえなくなってしまう確率は言語能力の習得を終えた子供よりも高いことがわかりました。化学療法を開始後3年以内に5歳以下の子供の78%、5歳以上の子供の48%が耳が聞こえなくなってしまっていたことが分かりました。

耳が聞こえなくなってしまう原因は分かっていませんが、化学療法に用いられる薬が耳の音を聞き取る部分に対して悪影響を与えてしまうと考えられています。

原因を早く究明し、これから癌の治療を始める子供達がこれ以上辛い思いをしなくて良くなるよう願います。

A reputable university in University of British Columbia has revealed that when the chemotherapy is used to treat paediatric cancer, kids may be subjected to experience hearing loss. 

Among all children, children who are in the process of learning language were more likely to experience hearing loss than children who are old enough and finished acquiring language. Within 3 years from the start of the  chemotherapy initiation, 78% of children younger than 5 years old, and 48% of children above 5 years old were not able to hear. 

The reason behind the hearing loss is still not determined, but it is thought that the chemicals used for chemotherapy is affecting the inner part of the ear which picks up the sound. 

I hope researchers can find the mechanism behind this, and I hope children will not have to experience any more hard situation.
