児童養護施設で学んだこと What I Learnt from Vising Orphanage

児童養護施設に行く機会があり、そこで暮らしている子供たちと芋掘りや昼食を楽しんできました。普段の生活において、普段あまりニュースなどでも話題に上がらない養護児童施設の現状を考える機会は本当に少ないと思います。しかし、今がその実情を話し合い、改善していかなければいけない時なのではないかと思います。
1. 施設の老朽化
2.衛生的に不安な浴槽、洗濯施設
3.バランスが取れているとは言い難い食事
4.高校生は公共輸送機関を使えない長距離通学
などリストにしていくとキリがないくらいの問題を目の当たりにしました。小学生、中学生は近所の学校に通っているものの、高校生は晴れている日で４０〜５０分、雨の日であれば１時間〜１時間１５分かけて自転車で通学しているそうです。私たちが普段簡単に使ってしまう交通機関やすぐに買ってしまうコンビニの商品なども、彼らにとってみるととても貴重なものだということを身にしみて感じる事ができました。私たちの当たり前が通用しない世界の中で、一生懸命生活している子供たちがとても眩しかったです。
私は、このようなベストな環境とは言えない児童養護施設の環境向上などの運動をしている団体の方々と一緒に、市議会や県議会に向けた署名活動や嘆願書の作成などの活動に携わっていこうと思っています。
I went to the orphanage housing and ate lunch and did potato digging. In our daily life, there are not much time to think about the orphanages, since there are hardly any news coming up. However, today should be the time for us to stand up and think about what we can do. There are a lot more problems rising than I thought it would.
1. decrepit buildings
2. sanitation of bath and washing machine area
3. unbalanced meals
4. long distance schooling without any public transportation
and there are more and more problems that I saw and heard from this day-trip. Elementary and middle school kids are going to the nearest schools, but high school students go to the school wherever they were accepted to in Japan. Because of this, some students are required to go to very far schools from their home. According to a boy that I was talking to during this experience, average amount of time to go to school is about 40~50 minutes bike ride (only ONE-WAY) in the sunny days, and if it is raining, it takes them about 1h~1h15min bike ride. We take public transportation very easily when we feel it is too far to go to our destination, or buy goods from convenience store when we felt like getting it. Our "of course" does not work for them.
I will be working with this organisation who is woking towards improving the terrible environment of those homes around the Japan. I can only be a little power for them, but I believe that if we take some actions, there will be some positive impact.
